I live in a small town that's out of the way.
I worked in the steel mill and made little pay.
But now, the steel mill's closed down, and I'm without a job.
I got four kids to take care of, and my wife is trying hard.

Now, I'm unemployed and don't know what to do
Because there ain't no jobs and the bills are all due.
I got the small town blues, and at night, I cry.
And, if the levee breaks, we're all gonna' die.

The unemployment check hardly pays for food,
And if there is any left, it pays for our dues.
But, this can't keep up, and soon I'll lose my home,
And I've had nightmares that soon I'll be all alone.

'Cause, I'm unemployed and don't know what to do
Because there ain't no jobs and the bills are all due.
I got the small town blues, and at night, I cry.
And, if the levee breaks, we're all gonna' die.

The days get darker and the future's looking worse.
You know, I'm trying hard, but my luck had been cursed.
I'm holding onto nothing and don't know why I try.
And now, it's cut so close, I can barely survive.

'Cause, I'm unemployed and don't know what to do
Because there ain't no jobs and the bills are all due.
I got the small town blues, and at night, I cry.
And, if the levee breaks, we're all gonna' die.
We're all gonna' die!
